Suwa and Mes

 There are  a great variety of traditional beverages in the country። Most cultural groups have their own specialties። Yet። alcoholic beverages are often specialties of the christian section of society። As in most parts of the Islamic world። alcoholic drinks are taboo for Eritrean Muslims።

Suwa

The most popular traditional alcoholic beverages are Suwa and Mes። Suwa is a specialization of the Tigrinya (and also of Ethiopian Amhara) ethnolinguistic group። It is a combination of water and bread ( made from various grains such as millet and sorghum)። Mes is a type of alcoholic mead made of fermented honey። It is homemade and its strength may vary from brewer to brewer። ( Tesfagiorgis.
